The Nomad' was an very personal and raw experience for me. It came as a result of my marriage ending in January of 2015. After going on the road to tour ‘Broken Bones’ in February I then started work on new material. As much as it delves into the melancholy at times it does allow for that beautiful ‘silver lining’ that keeps us going in life. It was such a joy to collaborate with my old pal Joe Henry at ‘United Recording’ in LA. What an amazing and historic studio, and working with the musicians Joe invited in was a truly inspiring and uplifting process
After many years of writing and recording demos, I thought it was time to start getting them out into the universe. This first record - BROKEN BONES - takes a look at our life of emotions; how we can be overwhelmed by them or even how we attempt to control them, etc.
I’ve had the chance to collaborate with some great musicians on these songs. In 2009, during our MTC production of POOR BOY I got to know percussionist Michael Barker. He made me see the importance of turning my demos into proper recordings and put me in touch with keyboard player and producer Eddie Rayner. After many discussions Eddie set up a week in Neil Finn’s “Roundhead” studio in early 2011. He brought in Brett Adams and Jol Mulholland on guitar and bass and we embarked upon recording a bunch of tunes. Since then, as well as juggling a couple of films I’ve been overdubbing other parts, rearranging things, doing lots of vocals, and recording other newer songs at my studio in Melbourne with the likes of Shannon Birchall, Dave Herzog, Steve Ely, the SILO String Quartet, and friends Rebecca Barnard, Gursel Ali, Paul Gleeson, Gemma Staude, Heather Barber and Virginia Bott adding beautiful vocals.
I know my music may not be everyone's cup of tea, so I appreciate you giving it a listen. Even though these tunes are not necessarily biographical, the observation and expression of emotions is as much about me as they are about anybody.
